Charlotte’s Story of the Pain of Hemorrhoids Years after Pregnancy
Without my hemorrhoid treatments at the St. Louis Hemorrhoid Care and Treatment Center I would have never been able to fulfill one of my lifetime goals which was to hike the Grand Canyon and the mountains around Flagstaff, Arizona.
This picture was taken from my trip. I was able to hike every day pain free.
I wanted to share my story because I suffered pain from hemorrhoids for 20 years before coming to see Dr. Abbadessa. After my first hemorrhoid treatment I was finally free from pain.
When the Pain Started – No Doctors Gave me Good Answers
The pain began after my son was born, 20 years ago! I had gained 50 pounds when I was pregnant. The pain that I had was debilitating. It would almost always come when I was walking or on my feet for long periods of time. I describe it as almost labor pains in my rectum. The pain seemed to last forever, but it was maybe for five minutes. Then it would go away.
This pain wouldn’t happen all of the time, so, because it went away, I didn’t think much of it. One day I asked my mother and brother if they had similar pains and they said, yes. That, however, was the end of the conversation. They didn’t have an answer either, but I felt a little better realizing that it wasn’t just me.
During a physical I asked my internist what was causing the pain and should I be concerned? He told me that it was muscle spasms and that I should roll up a towel and put pressure on the area of the pain. Well, that was fine at home, but if I was in the middle of a walking trail, I wasn’t going to have a towel to sit on!
Going in for my annual check-up with my gynecologist, I asked him what could be causing the pain in my rectum. He didn’t even have an answer for me!
After living with this pain coming and going, it was getting worse. My husband and I love to take our high spirited, Labrador Retriever on long hikes. Almost always, in the middle of the hike, the pain would come. I’d stop and practically burst into tears because the pain was unbearable. Then it would go away again. I started to get concerned that something really serious was going on. I was really scared.
Finally! Someone Understood – Dr. Abbadessa
I happen to work out at the same place where Dr. Abbadessa works out. Knowing he was a Proctologist, I asked him what the pain was. He knew exactly what I was talking about – finally, someone understood, and told me he could help me. He told me that he had lots of female patients experiencing the same problem and he was able to help them.
When I went to the office, I was really nervous. Although I had visited my OBGYN for many years, I didn’t know what to expect from this experience. Dr. Abbadessa and his staff made me feel entirely at ease.
I had no idea what was causing my pain. So when Dr. Abbadessa did the exam and told me I had hemorrhoids, I was shocked! I had no bleeding, no itching, and no symptoms other than this horrendous pain.
He explained to me that gaining a lot of weight during pregnancy was what caused the hemorrhoids. Then I lost a lot of weight. The hemorrhoids would enlarge when I exercised because of the blood rushing throughout the body. Hemorrhoids are the varicose veins of the anus and rectum, so they would enlarge. There is an area where there are no nerve endings where the hemorrhoids rest, but when they enlarged they would drop into the pain center. So, when I exercised for a long period of time, that’s when the pain kicked in. That explained why the pain came and then went away.
Never in a million years would I have thought I had hemorrhoids.
That day he did a treatment in the office to reduce their size. I experienced very little pain and nothing like the pain from the hemorrhoids. Since I had a pretty strong case, I went back for several treatments and have continued to be pain free ever since.
My husband and I take long hikes and I’ve never had the pain return, not even hiking all day at the Grand Canyon. I can’t believe that I suffered that long, 20 years! But it’s an embarrassing problem and a specialized problem. I had talked to two other physicians who did not specialize in the diagnosis or treatment of hemorrhoids and received no help.
I whole heartedly recommend that if you are suffering from any kind of pain in your rectum, and especially if you are having bleeding or itching, that you contact Dr. Abbadessa. He also has a great staff that makes you feel completely comfortable and at ease.
